How is it possible to have a great friend and production partner who you’ve never met in person?

One step a time.

Introduction by a mutual broadcasting friend in 2019. Remote collaboration between Boston and London, with regular phone calls. A joke here, a joke there, work phone calls that turn into therapy sessions.

The year 2020 … COVID … yet, we still find projects on which to collaborate. More phone calls and jokes during the dark, uncertain times of the pandemic. The work continues. We text and call for good reasons, and no reasons. We connect each other with others globally, turning great productions along the way.

London, Iceland, Australia … boomerang back to the U.S.

The work calls us. We answer.

‘It comes easy to us’

This is how Brad Cramer and Will Frampton have had years of friendship and collaboration, without ever sharing the same time zone. When there is a story to be told, a production to be delivered – first in London, now in eastern Australia – there is one call, and only one call, McLeod Media first makes.

Gear in hand, Brad Cramer is ready to help tell your story.

Brad Cramer has always answered.

“When the phone rings and I see McLeod Media calling, I wonder, ‘what good stuff has Will caught,’” said Cramer. “I love the topics, from global matters, to social issues, to people traveling.”

“We have the skills and the background, and the knowledge and experience from working on the issues of broadcasting over the years. So, it comes easy to us, to embrace a story, and get it to the finish line.”

Cramer carries a lifetime of producing experience, starting in 1993 as a photographer at Channel 7 in Sydney, Australia – his home country. Opportunity called him to London in 2005, where for 17 years he was a regular producer with the BBC, Aljazeera, ZDF, Reuters, and other multinational platforms.

‘A natural enthusiasm’

“I’m fortunate,” Cramer said. “It has been magical and unexpected, to have the opportunities that I’ve had. I’ve had fantastic working relationships, globally. It’s just truly remarkable to be given the opportunity to go into an industry that allowed me to travel, and do what I love best. I barely ever have a bad experience. Some are difficult and stressful, but at the end of the day, you walk out having told a story that no one else has told.”

Cramer continued: “I have a natural enthusiasm for anyone’s story, to engage and embrace someone’s message, their business, or life. I just love to see how the sound and visuals come together, that tells their story.”

It was 2019 in London, in advance of a project with long-time McLeod Media client P20, that Cramer first produced with Will Frampton. From handling the ever-challenging parking in London, to being set up with beautiful interview shots overlooking the financial district, everything about the collaboration signaled that it was just the first of many to come.

In 2022, when Cramer chose to return to and pursue new opportunities in his home land of Australia, still there were opportunities for collaboration. The feeling of knowing that such a trusted partner is totally in control of the situation, a world away, is valuable and reassuring beyond measure.

“Will and I have bonded so quickly, because of the familiarity with the industry, and our shared interests,” said Cramer. “It’s the ability to embrace not only the skills of our craft, but also to embrace the technology, and use those bridges to connect, and feel like we’re communicating from just a couple of streets away.”

Now, six years on, Frampton stays in regular contact with Cramer, always looking for the next opportunity. There’s bound to be one out there again, soon. Perhaps even a chance for in-person collaboration.

If you happen to wind up with a McLeod Media production that features some of Cramer’s video, you will know that video was earned through years of mutual trust and respect. A testament to how the world knows no borders, when it comes to friendship and collaboration.
